What you will learn

Learners will gain the essential knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to work safely and effectively around horses. The course covers a wide range of introductory horse care topics, including:

Horse Care Basics

  • Grooming and maintaining horse cleanliness

  • Safe handling techniques

  • Recognising basic horse behaviour and body language

  • Understanding daily welfare routines

Stable Management

  • Mucking out and maintaining clean stables

  • Bedding types and stable set-up

  • Yard organisation and routine tasks

Feeding & Watering

  • Identifying different types of feed

  • Basic understanding of horse nutrition

  • Correct watering routines and monitoring intake

Tack & Equipment

  • Identifying different pieces of tack

  • Basic tack cleaning

  • Safe use and care of everyday equipment

Health & Safety

  • Yard safety procedures

  • Personal protective equipment

  • Understanding potential risks around horses

  • Safe working practices

Learning is delivered through hands-on practical sessions, supported theory, and real experience working with our horses on the yard.

Course Structure

The Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care is delivered through a blend of practical, hands-on learning and supported theory to ensure every learner develops confidence and competence at their own pace.

How the course is delivered:

  • Weekly structured sessions led by experienced Coaches

  • Practical yard-based learning with our horses

  • Supported theory work to build understanding

  • Portfolio-based evidence (completed throughout the course)

  • Continuous observation and assessment of practical skills

  • Guided tasks and activities to build independence and responsibility

Learners work through a series of units that contribute towards the full City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma.
Progress is steady, supportive and tailored to each individual.

Progression Opportunities

Completing the Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care opens the door to a variety of further education and training pathways within the equine industry. Learners will be well-prepared to continue building their skills, confidence and knowledge.

After Level 1, learners can progress to:

  • Level 2 Technical Qualification in Horse Care

  • Further riding or coaching development

  • Work experience placements within equine environments

  • Volunteer roles at equestrian centres or community projects

  • Equine-related apprenticeships (depending on age and suitability)

  • Our own Level 2 Vocational progression pathways at The Orchard (where applicable)

This qualification provides a strong foundation for those wishing to pursue a career in the equine sector, or continue learning in a structured, supportive and welfare-focused environment.

Entry Requirements

Learners must meet the following entry requirements to join the Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care:

Age Requirements

  • Minimum age: 14 years or 12 years if progressing from The Orchard Reins & Roots Journey

Suitability

  • A genuine interest in horses and practical learning

  • Willingness to work safely around horses

  • Ability to follow instructions and participate in both practical and theory tasks

Clothing & Footwear

Learners must come prepared with:

  • A correctly fitted riding helmet (to current standards)

  • Long trousers or jodhpurs

  • Strong, supportive boots with a small heel

  • Weather-appropriate clothing

Experience

  • No previous horse experience is required - beginners are welcome.

  • Learners just need a positive attitude and readiness to learn.
