The Orchard Equine College

The Orchard Equine College delivers vocational, equine-based education for learners aged 12 and above, offering a structured Level 1 pathway for ages 12–16 alongside a full Post-16 provision.

As a City & Guilds Approved Centre and accredited Alternative Provision provider, we create clear progression routes into nationally recognised qualifications, practical skill development and equine industry careers.

Our qualifications are delivered within our structured Orchard education model, combining hands-on training, individual support and real-world equine experience.

Level 1 Programme (Ages 12–16)

City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care

The Level 1 Diploma provides a supportive introduction to formal equine training for younger learners beginning their vocational journey.

This qualification focuses on building essential foundations in:

  • Basic horse health and welfare

  • Feeding, watering and daily care routines

  • Grooming and stable management

  • Safe handling and working practices

  • Understanding yard environments

Learners work directly with horses on a daily basis, developing confidence, responsibility and structured routines in a practical setting.

For many young people, the hands-on nature of this programme supports re-engagement with education while building resilience and a sense of achievement.

The Level 1 Diploma provides a clear stepping stone into Post-16 progression, including Level 2 qualifications, apprenticeships or employment within stables, riding schools and equine-assisted settings.

Post-16 Provision (Ages 16+)

City & Guilds Level 1, Level 2 & Level 3 Pathways

Our Post-16 provision offers a flexible, vocational alternative to traditional education for learners who thrive in practical environments.

Depending on experience and readiness, learners may progress through:

  • City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Horse Care (foundation route where required)

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Horse Care & Management

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Horse Care , Management & Coaching

Programmes are supported by:

  • Practical, industry-led equine training

  • Functional Skills (where applicable)

  • Employability and preparation for adulthood development

  • Real working yard experience

Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care

The Level 2 Diploma builds upon foundational knowledge and introduces greater responsibility within yard environments.

Learners develop competence in:

  • Horse health and welfare

  • Feeding and nutrition

  • Stable and yard management

  • Equine behaviour

  • Safe working practices

Significant practical time with horses ensures learning is applied in real-world contexts, strengthening employability, confidence and maturity.

Completion of Level 2 opens pathways into apprenticeships, groom roles, riding school positions and further progression to Level 3.

Level 3 Diploma in Horse Care & Management

For post-16 learners aiming for advanced knowledge and professional progression

The Level 3 Diploma is an advanced qualification designed for learners seeking leadership, coaching routes or higher-level industry readiness.

Learners develop comprehensive understanding in:

  • Advanced horse health and care planning

  • Equine behaviour and performance management

  • Supervising yard activities

  • Exercise physiology and conditioning

  • Professional responsibility and decision-making

Where appropriate, learners may support coaching and mentoring activities under supervision, building experience for future instructional roles.

The Level 3 Diploma supports progression into higher education, employment, apprenticeships or advanced equine management positions.
