Developed exclusively by The Orchard Equine College, it is a structured equine assisted development framework designed for learners who may not thrive within traditional classroom environments.

Reins & Roots integrates personal development, emotional regulation and practical responsibility within a calm, rural working environment.

It underpins all Alternative Provision and supports progression into accredited City & Guilds pathways.

What Makes Reins & Roots Different

Reins & Roots is not a collection of horse-based activities.

It is a carefully sequenced framework built around:

Each phase builds intentionally upon the last, creating layered, measurable development.

How It Is Delivered

Reins & Roots operates 1–3 days per week within our working equestrian environment.

Sessions combine:

• Clear expectations and boundaries
• Guided reflection and review
• Goal-setting and progress tracking

Learners are supported to understand how skills developed on the yard transfer into education, employment and everyday life.

Due to positive progress and vocational interest, the commissioning school elected to:
• Maintain placement at The Orchard
• Progress learner onto the Level 1 Horse Care pathway
The 12-week programme built readiness for school while simultaneously establishing vocational direction.
Case Study - Post-16 Progression & Stability

Context
Learner joined The Orchard Equine College at Post-16 Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care after experiencing difficulty sustaining placement within previous college settings.
The learner had a history of disrupted attendance and low confidence within educational environments.

Measurable Progress
Attendance & Engagement
Although earlier attendance patterns impacted overall figures, attendance during the autumn term improved significantly, with only two days absent .
Since January 2026, attendance has been 100%, demonstrating sustained improvement and commitment .
When present, the learner arrives prepared, focused and fully engaged in both practical and theory-based sessions .
Academic & Portfolio Achievement
The learner is fully up to date with all academic and portfolio work, producing submissions of outstanding quality.
Work demonstrates:
• Strong application of theory to practical contexts
• Clear organisation and professionalism
• Depth of understanding
Due to strong progress, the learner has begun engaging with more complex qualification content (Unit 227 – Assist with the Rehabilitation of Horses) .
Practical & Vocational Competence
Strengths include:

• Feeding routines and horse health checks.
• Understanding of anatomy and rehabilitation-based activities.
• Strong teamwork and peer support.
The learner demonstrates professionalism and leadership qualities valued within the equine industry.
Emotional Development
The learner has made notable progress in emotional regulation and self-confidence within the college environment.
She now:
• Manages challenges calmly
• Responds positively to feedback
• Communicates effectively with trusted adults.
EHCP outcomes relating to regulation, engagement and preparation for adulthood show strong progress.
Outcome
The learner is thriving on the Level 2 Diploma programme, demonstrating sustained attendance, academic excellence and strong vocational competence.
EHCP provision remains appropriate and effective, with no changes recommended at review.
