Land-Based Pathway

Ground & Growth – Learning Through Practical Skills

The Land-Based Pathway at The Orchard provides a structured, hands-on approach to learning through practical work and real-world experiences.

Designed for young people who benefit from active, purposeful learning, this pathway supports learners to build confidence, develop independence and gain transferable skills for the future.

A Structured Pathway for Growth

At the heart of this pathway is Ground & Growth — our framework focused on practical skills, responsibility and progression.

Delivered as a 12-week intervention or extended into a personalised long-term placement, the pathway provides a clear structure for engagement, development and measurable progress.

From Development to Vocational Progression (In Development)

As learners grow in confidence and capability, they will be supported to progress into structured vocational learning.

The Orchard is currently developing its land-based provision, with a focus on:

  • Practical, real-world skill development

  • Outdoor and land-based learning environments

  • Preparation for employability, responsibility and independence

These pathways are designed to support progression into further education, apprenticeships, employment and adult life.

A Supportive Environment for Every Learner

We support learners aged 8–16 and Post-16, including those with additional needs and EHCPs.

This pathway is particularly suited to learners who may not thrive in traditional classroom environments, especially those who:

  • Learn best through practical, hands-on experiences

  • Benefit from structure, routine and clear expectations

  • Engage through purposeful, real-world tasks

  • Need support with confidence, emotional regulation and relationships

Through a trauma-informed, relationship-led approach, we provide a calm and structured environment where learners feel safe, supported and able to make meaningful progress.

  • SEMH

We specialise in supporting learners to develop emotional regulation, confidence, resilience and positive relationships.

Through a trauma-informed approach, clear structure and consistent routines, we create a safe and supportive environment where young people feel understood and able to make meaningful progress through practical, purposeful activity.

Our approach provides the time, space and consistency learners need to feel safe, build trust and begin engaging with learning at their own pace.

Through working alongside animals, learners benefit from a calm, responsive and non-judgemental environment that supports the development of confidence, communication and positive relationships.

  • Learners Who Thrive in Practical, Outdoor Environments

For many young people, confidence grows when learning moves beyond the classroom.

At The Orchard, learning is active, practical and grounded in real-world experience, enabling learners to engage through movement, nature and meaningful tasks.

Our rural environment provides a calm and focused setting, where learners can feel settled, capable and ready to progress through practical, hands-on learning.

  • Rebuilding Engagement in Learning

We support learners who may have experienced challenges within traditional school environments, including those with a history of exclusion, low attendance or school-based anxiety.

Our approach focuses on re-engagement, providing a safe, structured and supportive environment where learners can rebuild trust in education at their own pace.

Through outdoor learning and animal-based experiences, learners develop routine, confidence and more positive relationships with learning.

  • Primary to Post-16 Learners

We support learners from early intervention through to post-16, providing structured pathways that adapt to each stage of development.

Whether learners are beginning to re-engage with education or preparing for vocational progression, our provision offers continuity, consistency and clear next steps.

    We welcome learners from:

    - Primary age (8+)

    - Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4

    - Post-16

How We Support Our Learners

A Safe, Structured and Relational Approach

We provide a calm, consistent and well-structured environment where every learner is supported through a trauma-informed and personalised approach.

Through strong relationships and animal-assisted learning, young people build confidence, feel understood and begin to engage in meaningful, sustained progress.

  • Trauma-Informed & Attachment-Aware Practice

Many of our learners have experienced challenges that impact their ability to feel safe, trust others or engage in traditional education.

Our approach prioritises safety, consistency and relationships , creating an environment where learners can begin to regulate, build trust and re-engage at their own pace.

    Through this approach, learners experience:

    - Consistent, trusted adults

    - Predictable routines and structure

    - Low-demand, relationship-led communication

    - Empathy, attunement and understanding

    - Calm, regulated responses

This provides the foundation for learners to feel secure, develop confidence and make sustained progress.

  • Experienced, Nurturing Staff

Our team combines specialist knowledge with a calm, relationship-led approach, supporting learners with SEMH needs, ADHD and a range of neurodivergent profiles.

With training in emotional regulation, mental health awareness and de-escalation, alongside experience in animal behaviour and safe handling, staff create a safe, structured and consistent learning environment.

Learners are supported by familiar adults who build trust, model emotional safety and celebrate every step of progress, no matter how small.
