The Animal Care Pathway at The Orchard provides a structured, hands-on approach to learning through working with animals and the natural environment.

Designed for young people who may not thrive in traditional classroom settings, this pathway supports learners to build confidence, develop emotional awareness and gain independence through meaningful, practical experiences.

A Structured Pathway for Growth

At the heart of this pathway is Nurture & Nature , our bespoke framework focused on wellbeing, responsibility and connection.

Through a structured and supportive approach, learners develop confidence, emotional awareness and practical skills within a calm, nature-based environment.

From Development to Vocational Progression ( In Development )

As learners develop confidence and capability, they will be supported to progress into structured vocational learning.

The Orchard is currently developing its City & Guilds accredited animal care provision, with planned pathways including:

  • Level 1, 2 and Level 3 Animal Care

  • Practical land-based learning

  • Preparation for employability and independence

These pathways are designed to support progression into further education, apprenticeships, employment and adult life.

A Supportive Environment for Every Learner

We support learners aged 8–16 and Post-16, including those with additional needs and EHCPs.

This pathway is designed for young people who may not thrive in traditional settings, particularly those who:

  • Find classroom-based learning challenging

  • Engage best through practical, hands-on experiences

  • Need support with confidence, emotional regulation and relationships

Through a trauma-informed, relationship-led approach, we create a calm and consistent environment where learners feel safe, understood and able to make meaningful progress.

  • SEMH

    We specialise in supporting learners to develop emotional regulation, confidence, resilience and positive relationships.

    Through a trauma-informed approach and consistent routines, we create a safe and structured environment where young people feel understood, supported and able to make meaningful progress.

  • Neurodiversity

    We support learners with a range of neurodiverse profiles, including Autism, ADHD, PDA, sensory processing differences and communication needs.

    Our environment is designed to reduce anxiety and support engagement through:

    - Predictable structure and routine

    - Clear, consistent communication

    - Low-demand, relationship-led approaches

    - Sensory-aware, calming environments

    - Staff with a strong understanding of neurodivergent presentation

  • Supporting Anxiety & Communication Differences

    We support learners who may experience anxiety, communication differences or feel overwhelmed in traditional or group-based environments.

    Our approach allows learners the time and space they need to feel safe, build trust and begin engaging with learning at their own pace.

    Through working with Animals, learners benefit from a calm, responsive and non-judgemental environment that supports the development of confidence, communication and positive relationships.

  • Learners Who Thrive in Practical, Outdoor Environments

    For many young people, confidence grows when learning moves beyond the classroom.

    At The Orchard, learning is active, practical and grounded in real experience ,allowing learners to engage through movement, nature and meaningful tasks.

    Our rural environment, including stables, arenas and land-based spaces, creates a calm and focused setting where learners can feel settled, capable and ready to progress.

  • Rebuilding Engagement in Learning

    We support learners who may have experienced difficulties within traditional school environments, including those with a history of exclusion, low attendance or school-based anxiety.

    Our approach focuses on re-engagement ,providing a safe, structured and supportive environment where learners can rebuild trust in education at their own pace.

    Through outdoor learning and Animal based experiences, learners develop routine, confidence and more positive relationships with learning.

  • Primary to Post-16 Learners

    We support learners from early intervention through to post-16, providing structured pathways that adapt to each stage of development.

    Whether learners are beginning to re-engage with education or preparing for vocational progression, our provision offers continuity, consistency and clear next steps.

    We welcome learners from:

    - Primary age (8+)

    - Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4

    - Post-16

    Our approach prioritises safety, consistency and relationships , creating an environment where learners can begin to regulate, build trust and re-engage at their own pace.

    - Low-demand, relationship-led communication

    - Empathy, attunement and understanding

    - Calm, regulated responses

    This provides the foundation for learners to feel secure, develop confidence and make sustained progress.

  • Experienced, Nurturing Staff

    Our team combines specialist knowledge with a calm, relationship-led approach, supporting learners with SEMH needs, ADHD and a range of neurodivergent profiles.

    Through training in emotional regulation, mental health awareness and de-escalation, alongside expertise in Animal behaviour and safe handling, staff create a safe and consistent learning environment.

    Learners are supported by familiar adults who build trust, model emotional safety and celebrate every step of progress ,no matter how small.

  • Personalised, Needs-Led Programmes

    Every learner’s journey at The Orchard is individual.

    Programmes are carefully shaped around each learner’s needs, strengths and way of engaging, allowing them to build confidence and progress at a pace that feels achievable.

    We consider:

    - Interests, strengths and motivation

    - EHCP outcomes (where applicable)

    There is no fixed pathway , learners progress when they are ready, with support that adapts alongside them.

    Our environment is carefully designed to reduce anxiety, providing clear expectations, safe boundaries and routines that learners can rely on.

    This progression prepares learners for successful transitions into further education, apprenticeships, employment and adult life.

    Our environment is carefully managed to ensure learners are supported both physically and emotionally, with clear structure, strong safeguarding and consistent supervision.

Parents and carers are welcome to make initial enquiries; however, placements must be accessed through school or Local Authority commissioning routes.
